I’m upset.

And I’m pissed.
Don’t worry, though
I’ll get over it.
Because what choice do I have?
There’s really very little I can do.
But I am hopeful that, eventually, the truth will out.
And decency and sanity will be restored.
I am optimistic that this madness will end.
I am counting on the survival of our republic.
But just in case I’m wrong
And Donald Trump gets re-elected
I will be exploring other countries to move to.
Being an expat might not be so bad
Compared to staying around
And witnessing the dissolution
Of the American republic.

Having BEEN an expat for 10 years, I can tell you that it’s fine — as long as you don’t mind losing track of your friends and family “back home.” That’s what finally brought me home, the sense that I was losing track of everyone at home — and I realized I knew where home was — and it wasn’t there. It was here.

I felt that way eighteen years ago when I moved to Mexico. I’m still here, ahead of my times, I guess. And it has only gotten worse. I had hopes for awhile, but. . . .

Gee, not much different here in Canada.
Our Prime Minister, government and specifically the PMO(prime minister’s office) has found themselves neck-deep in a corruption and Obstruction of Justice scandal that will not go away, despite them shutting down a Justice Committee that was investigating it, plus a host of other nefarious actions to keep the lid on things. It ain’t working though. The media, the official Opposition Parties and the Canadian people just keep at it.
The nut of it is, the government and specifically the Prime Minister and his office tried to influence the outcome of a criminal proceeding against a major company(SNC Lavalin) and employer (and hence potential)votes in the province of Quebec. Hence the Obstruction of Justice tag.
This will likely result in a defeat of the current government in elections this fall if they can survive that long.

Interesting. I’ve been so focused on what is going on here on the States that I didn’t realize there were similar issues happening north of the border.

Yup, sure are. They government blocked a motion at The Ethics Committee yesterday to investigate the mess. So far they have shut down both Justice Committee and the one yesterday. The Prime Minister(PM) and the governing Liberal Party are doing everything to cover this up and protect the PM. The country is demanding now that the RCMP(Royal Canadian Mounted Police) investigate.

Actually, of late, my wife, who is Jewish, has been talking about moving to Israel if antisemitism in the US (and Canada and Europe) gets too bad. Given that certain freshmen members of Congress have been absolutely blatant about their antisemitism and that the larger body of Congressional Democrats have done little or nothing to curb this sentiment, I’m wondering if that’ll be sooner rather than later?
Trump will be gone in two to six years max, but people like Rashida Tlaib, Ilhan Omar, and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez could be with us for forty or fifty years, more than enough time to turn the U.S. into an antisemitic version of Venezuela.

I think there’s a fine line between expressing opposition to the Israeli government’s policies and practices and being antisemitic. I know many Jews who are aghast at some of the things that Netanyahu and the right-wing Israeli government are doing, but they’re obviously not antisemitic. Yet I can see how criticism of the American Jewish community for its financial support can cause some to think they support Israel, right or wrong, above the United States. I feel the same way about Republicans who have a blind loyalty to Donald Trump over what is in the best interests of our country and our democratic republic. Did I get off topic? Sorry about that.

A fine line and they crossed it. My wife calls liberal Jews who seek the destruction of Israel “self-hating Jews” since it is vital to Jewish survival for them to have their own state and defend it. The original topic, which many celebrities declared but didn’t follow through on, is leaving the U.S. at least while Trump is President, and I segued into moving to Israel to escape an antisemitic America.

I don’t equate opposing the current political policies and practices of the Israeli government under Netanyahu with “seeking the destruction of Israel.” I am appalled by the current political policies and practices of the US government under Trump, but I don’t seek the destruction of the United States.

I left California thirty-one years ago this June… mainly because of housing prices. Although we could afford something decent, I wanted a bigger yard for my first child and growing family. Sadly, also, California eliminated their program for people born in California — that, if I remember correctly, they could go to a state college without paying tuition. That wasn’t part of our thinking on moving, yet it makes California less attractive now. But, yeah, I don’t hate California and am not anti-Californian.
As for Donald Trump and anti Semitism, that excuse of a man has said anti-Semitic things. But he’s a Republican —therefore he, like Netanyahu (not Republican but right-wing authoritarian), is the messiah; or close enough [current pseudoMessiah], as in the parallel or type of an ungodly Old Testament king doing god’s will (if you check their internal talking points, that’s not something I made up out of the blue). And the Trumps wear expensive clothes [even if made in China], so they must be pretty.

I want to do that too, ‘cept I’m too poor. It’s money that makes the wheels turn, and if you don’t have much, well you just might be forked. Still staying here, because I’m reliant on that idiot and his cronies for my money is scary as hell. Maybe I’ll look into buying some on-line cyanide. I don’t think whatever they cough up for candidates is gonna be much better, in fact, given the choices things most likely will get worse. But I’m with you in the opinion that that pile of orange shit needs to be ousted. Him and his ugly family.

My middle son, turning fifty in October feels the same. He and his wife have had nothing but problems with the immigration grinder. She is a businesswoman from Canada, for Pete’s sake and it took three years before they could marry and after five years of hassle, they are still having to report, file expensive paperwork, etc today. Her parents still live in France and they’ll be moving in a year or two just for these reasons; where my son will be accepted much more easily. I have personal reasons to be upset with laws and the way they are twisted and this is just one example. It’s not improving with T in office. I feel your pain.

Hillary? She lost her campaign to be President. [And, although Trump and other Republicans keep talking like she never got investigated, she did. Too bad he’s not getting investigated like she was on Benghazi. And too bad he gets to be even more reckless with government communications.] The question now is how to protect our elections — except that’s a question for people who actually think democracy is a good idea; oh well. Oligarchs rule.

Her only accomplishment is being an unindicted felon who managed to lose an election to the most disliked man in recent history EVEN WHEN SHE CHEATED TO DO IT. Astounding, actually.

I’m an American–at least my passport makes this claim–but I lived as a expat for nearly twenty years and loved nearly every minute of it. Since I’m married to an Egyptian, that’s always an option again, especially if the feces hits the fan, and that’s looking ever more likely.
