“I think something is missing, Mom,” Janice said.

“And I know just what it is,” her mom said. She left her daughter’s room and returned a moment later with the rhinestone necklace her ex-husband gave her for an anniversary present. She place it around Janice’s neck, stepped back, and said, “You look absolutely regal.”

“Jonathan!” her mother called out to Janice’s younger brother. “Come see how pretty your sister looks in her prom dress.”

Jonathan came into the room, moved up close to his big sister, and standing right in front of her, he said, somewhat sarcastically, “Picture perfect.”

Janice took a step back, wiped her cheek with the back of her hand, and said, “Eww, Jonathan, say it, don’t spray it.”
