50 Word Thursday — Fools Abound

4E7B3CA4-F5AD-4485-855E-1E512081A60E“Fooling, fooling, too much fooling,” the painted-face man was shouting as he pranced around the fairgrounds wearing a fool’s costume.

A little girl ran up to the man and asked, “Are you a clown?”

“No,” he said, “I am a fool.”

“But you said there’s too much fooling,” the confused girl said.

“Look around,” he said, waving his arm in a broad, sweeping motion. “They are all fools. But they are all wearing makeup to hide their foolishness.

“But you’re wearing makeup,” the girl said.

“That’s because I’m the king of fools,” he said. “The most foolish of them all.”

Written for this week’s 50 Word Thursday prompt from Teresa at The Haunted Wordsmith. The object is to write a story based upon the photo at the top of this post and to incorporate the line, “Fooling, fooling, too much fooling,” from Astrid Lindgren’s “Pippi Longstocking.” The story must be between 50 and 250 words, in 50 word increments.
