Why is she pissed at me? Because the New England Patriots won the Super Bowl last night. And because I rooted for them and was happy that they won.
But why is she pissed at me simply for rooting for the Patriots? Because the owner of the Patriots, Robert Kraft, is tight with Donald Trump. And because the head coach of the Patriots, Bill Belichick, and Donald Trump admire one another. And because a red MAGA hat was once spotted in Tom Brady’s locker.
Trump has repeatedly hailed the Patriots as “winners” and touted his friendly relationship with Brady, Kraft, and Belichick. He claims that they support his presidency.
My wife really hates Donald Trump and anyone who supports, endorses, or enables him. And in her mind, by rooting for the Patriots, I was, by proxy, endorsing Donald Trump.
Never before has she given two shits about how the owners, coaches, or players on a sports team felt about the person occupying the Oval Office. Or about what teams the president liked. Nor have I.
So thank you, Donald Trump, for politicizing professional football. Isn’t it bad enough that you have divided the country with your divisive talk and deeds? Now you have created a divide between my wife and me over the Super Bowl.
I’m sure that, in a day or two, my wife’s anger at me for rooting for the Patriots and for being happy that they won the Super Bowl will blow over.
But in the meantime, fuck you, Donald Trump. Just fuck you.

Well, to tell you the truth, if I weren’t a long time Patriots fan who thinks Brady is possibly the best quarterback ever and that Belichick might be the best head football coach ever, I might be right there with her.

Sadly, I really understand the feeling. I have very mixed emotions about it too, even though I love the Pats and am always glad when they win. We don’t root for teams based on politics. In fact, one of the reasons for enjoying sports is that you can ignore politics in this one area of life. But it’s hard to explain this to someone who isn’t a fan, doesn’t care about the game, and doesn’t see were sometimes, in the name of sanity, we have to let the politics go. At least for the season’s games.

My wife is no longer angry at me over a football game. She was never THAT angry in the first place. But the fact that she was irritated at me at all made good fodder for a post on my blog. As to Trump, he is destroying our country, he is a traitor who won his election because of interference by a foreign adversary and is essentially doing Putin’s bidding. His rhetoric and actions are divisive. He is removing measures designed to protect our air, water, and environment. He has made our country the laughing stock of the world. He has abandoned our allies and embraced our adversaries. He’s an amoral crook and a con artist.
As to me, I am accountable for my own actions and life and take responsibility to exercise my freedom of speech and thought. One way of doing so is to be highly critical of Donald Trump because of the things I’ve already mentioned. Besides, writing the words “fuck you Donald Trump” feels cathartic. I don’t know what your politics are and if you are or are not a Trump supporter, but if you don’t see that he is doing much more harm than good, your eyes aren’t open or your brain is malfunctioning.

I see the similarities between trump and obama. On the surface, any criticism of obama was immediately labeled as racist, any criticism of trump and you hate America.
If you think trump was the first president to politicize sports, then how would you explain the relationship between sports, the olympics and the various sentiments around all of them?
Why are tax payer dollars used to build these stadiums? Why is the NFL a not-for-profit organization?
I can understand your criticism of trump, but to solely blame him, is to willfully ignore what has taken place up to this moment.
If you truly believe this about trump, then you must acknowledge his power over not only us, but the entire world.
If trump is the only guilty party in this fiasco, then are you saying that no one else is culpable?

Cities and states use tax dollars for stadiums to generate additional revenues and to create jobs. I’m not in favor of that use of tax dollars, but it is what it is. I also don’t think the NFL or any sports enterprise should be designated as not-for-profit and I also don’t think churches should be tax-exempt.

See that’s what I’m getting at, if he is the only “bad guy” in the room, then how did that take place? I think it is lazy to simply toss stereotypes around as to who voted for who. I don’t believe that type of thinking gets us anywhere except for where we are already at.

I used to think Dubya was a bit of a moron, but not a malevolent moron like Trump is. As to stereotypes, I do think the people who voted for Trump were duped, but if, after all his lies and the damage he’s done, they still support him, they are either blind, stupid, or racist.

He is viewed favorably by less than 40% of the voters, and that’s his core base and his rabid supporters. So I think there are many more who think he’s malignant than who think he’s not.

Dude, you can’t just leave it alone. Here’s what I’m saying. Who knows what is and what is not accurate. There are literally hundreds of thousands of polls. Who knows what they ask and how they ask it. Who knows who says gives the honest answer.
Polls are by no means scientific, especially political polls.

Most of those polls are carefully professionally conducted with structured questions intended to be unbiased. And, while not 100% accurate or flawless, are indicative and reflective.

The National Anthem is played before most professional sporting events. It’s a ritual. But there is no requirement to stand for the playing or singing of the National Anthem. It’s just a tradition. Why has an athlete taking a knee in a peaceful, silent protest before a football game become such a political issue? One reason and one reason only: Donald Trump chose to make it one.
