Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question. By provocative, I don’t mean a question that will cause annoyance or anger. Nor do I mean a question intended to arouse sexual desire or interest.
What I do mean is a question that is likely to get you to think, to be creative, and to provoke a response. Hopefully a positive response.
This week’s provocative question is about the choices we make and the actions we take.
“What is more important to you, doing the right thing or doing things right?”

Doing the right thing, hands down. Although reading through bloggers and media reports regarding the Gillette commercial, I am in the minority (although not really). Between the responses to the ad and the president my head’s going to shake off its stand soon.

I hadn’t heard about the commercial either. I like that they were working with their theme. I still haven’t watched the commercial (embedded in the article below), but I tend to disagree with the idea that working their theme around the metoo movement criticizes all men.

They’ve been showing it on Colbert. I haven’t actually SEEN the commercial as an ad, only being talked about. But you know, major companies are beginning to stand up and do the right thing. Not OIL companies, of course — but Coca Cola and many other large soft drink distributors are working together to eliminate plastic bottles — and a lot of companies are trying to tone down “boys will be boys” advertisements. About TIME too!
Speaking of Israel, the “boys will be boys” thing was so awful that they had to run a series of ads telling men to help their wives carry the groceries. The closing line was “Be a man. Give her a hand.” Because they did absolutely NOTHING and their wives would have like nine kids AND they worked cleaning other women’s houses, too.
Boys will be boys NOT just around here!

It is a very complex question; I would say “doing the right thing” ethically, and from one’s background (what we were taught as right) and personal point of view, but to me, that has to be in compliance with doing things legally, or “doing things right”, as well. In other words, they are equally important to me, I do not believe in “the end justifies the means.”

Thanks! I’ve seen two videos by the Curious George guy, and both times I’ve been very impressed. He doesn’t throw a lot of fancy words around, he speaks plainly. It’s refreshing.

I don’t know about that. I think doing the right thing will always have a moral component that doesn’t exist in just doing the job right. Like you know, plumbing. You do it right or it LEAKS.

Both. It depends on the situation for me. When tasked with a job, doing it right the first time saves time and a lot of heartache when you have to fix the mess you made by cutting corners. Doing the right thing for me is usually a response to ethical or ideological dilemmas. Things like fairness, telling the truth, being polite, thinking about others fall into this category. I guess you could say you pass the test as long as you’re not an asshole who does things half-ass. 😉 and there’s my two cents.
