Day 30 — Man in the Mirror

For today’s 30-Day Song Challenge, the very last one in this series, we are asked for “a song that reminds you of yourself.”

Actually, two songs came to mind. One is Paul Simon’s “I Am a Rock,” and the other is Michael Jackson’s “Man in the Mirror.”

In the case of Paul Simon’s song, I have always been a kind of aloof, distant person who protects myself from hurt and pain by building walls around me. Perhaps that explains why I blog anonymously. But as in the Michael Jackson song, I have, over the years, taken a good, hard look at myself in the mirror and discovered that I am capable of changing and have changed. I can tear down that protective wall and take the risk of hurt and disappointed for the sake of being more open to and with the people who are most important to me. But, that said, I’m not going to stop blogging anonymously.

So, with that in mind, I’m going to share both songs.

If I could start over online, I’d be anonymous too. But to do that now I’d have to cut all connection to everyone I know and it’s not worth it. I sometimes envy those who can go into more detail about personal relationships and get feedback.

I SWEAR I hadn’t read your post all the way through before I posted mine. We share something in that first song of yours then. I’d never EVER have guessed you felt that way too. Goodness.

awesome choices! Been there, a rock feels no pain and an island never cries. But it’s beautiful, the collage we can build from the bricks of our defenses once those walls come down. 😉

Or the man “behind the mask” — as you said on an earlier occasion.

I Am A Rock was played for students by school counsellors
to try and get kids to be more interactive with each other.

I just started watching Black Mirror on Netflix, it is like an updated version of The Twilight Zone.

One of my sons recommended watching that. When I did — the first episode — I thought he must be punking me and finding out if I would see it through. I watched longer than I wish I had, kept wondering if it would improve. My daughter-in-law tried watching a few episodes, skipping the first one, and never could see the point.

As Jim said, it’s like Twilight Zone. The first episode, if it’s the one I’m thinking about where the British PM has sex on live TV with a pig, was a bit out there, but I’ve enjoyed nearly all of the episodes since that one.

I really enjoy that show. It’s really well done, in my opinion.
