FC6B689E-7896-44EF-8DC4-552A3343AF5FRain or shine, it was that time of the year when the city held its annual “Santa’s Sycling Soirée.” Kids and adults dressed as Santa Claus or Santa’s elves and rode their bikes into the city. A number of the streets were closed off to vehicles in order to ensure the safety of the young cyclists.

Unfortunately, things didn’t go well this year. Heated arguments broke out amongst the older cyclists. Some fought about regular versus electric bikes. Others fought over Brexit. And others seemed to fight for no reason at all.

It’s the world we live in these days.

    My middle son says he thinks he will be in conflict with his current girlfriend when they get married and have a child. He doesn’t want his kids to believe in 🎅 while she does want that. And she apparently feels pretty strongly about it. One wonders why.

    Anyway… I said, “You don’t have to be like, NO, there’s NO Santa Claus! You just don’t drill it into them that there is.” He agreed. Besides, one of my five was thrilled with the idea of 🎅 even though it wasn’t a family thing. He saw movies. You know. When he asked for a Santa outfit (at the age of maybe nine), his Grandad gave him Santa suit pajamas.

    I was thinking about it in the last few days, though, the fact that so many strangers might not be seen as strangers by a child because of being taught to love Santa Claus — especially if said child is taken to get pictures with “him.” Kids aren’t supposed to talk to strangers, right? Or sit on their laps? And those guys are maybe too often that kind of stranger. One at least has to say to kids that every “Santa” is playing a part.

    {I actually didn’t tell my kids not to talk to strangers. But I did empower them not to have to cower to or idolize adults or anyone at all.}
