Song Lyric Sunday — Classic Favorite

Sometimes things just click. For example, for today’s Song Lyric Sunday theme, Helen chose “girls.” And for today’s 30-Day Song Challenge, we’re supposed to select “a song that’s a classic favorite.”30 DaySo how could I possibly not choose the classic favorite, “My Girl” by the Temptations?

“My Girl” was written and produced by Smokey Robinson and Ronald White. It was recorded by The Temptations and released in December 1964 and became The Temptations’ first number one single. It is considered to be their signature song.

When Robinson wrote the song he was married to his first wife, Claudette, and it was widely thought that he wrote it about her. But in an interview, Smokey said that the song is not about a specific girl, but was “written with all the women in the world in mind.”

The song was written in the Apollo Theater when The Temptations were playing as part of a package tour with The Miracles. After The Temptations heard the song, they convinced Robinson to let them record it instead of The Miracles. Robinson, who was Berry Gordy’s right-hand man at Motown agreed, and rehearsed the song with The Temptations for a week before recording it.

“My Girl” was the first Temptations single to feature David Ruffin on lead vocals and it led to a greater role for Ruffin with the group, as he became their primary lead singer.

Here are the lyrics to “My Girl.”

I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day.
When it’s cold outside I’ve got the month of May.

I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin’ ’bout my girl (my girl).

I’ve got so much honey the bees envy me.
I’ve got a sweeter song than the birds in the trees.

Well, I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin’ ’bout my girl (my girl).

Hey hey hey
Hey hey hey
Ooooh.

I don’t need no money, fortune or fame.
I’ve got all the riches, baby, one man can claim.

Well, I guess you’d say
What can make me feel this way?
My girl (my girl, my girl)
Talkin’ ’bout my girl (my girl).

I’ve got sunshine on a cloudy day
With my girl.
I’ve even got the month of May
With my girl
Talkin’ ’bout
Talkin’ ’bout
Talkin’ ’bout
My girl
Ooooh
My girl
As long as I can talk about my girl…
