Are Dead People Voyeurs?

CEB274F9-BD76-4B99-A978-93702D2271F0I was watching a TV show the other night when one character said to the other, “You’re father would be so proud of you. I bet he’s looking down from heaven right now with a big smile on his face.”

Yeah, right. Do people really belief that their dearly departed friends and relatives are looking down — or looking up, as the case may be — at them to see what they’re up to?

“Oh my God, Dan, that was the best sex ever. I bet your mom is looking down on you from heaven with a big smile on her face.” Oh wait, maybe it was Dan’s father who was looking up at him from hell and masturbating while watching Dan having a hot time with that blonde he picked up at that party. Hmm. Do the souls of dead people masturbate?

Do people really believe that the souls of their deceased loved ones are spending their days in the afterlife spying on their earthbound family members and pals? Do they do it all the time, or do they only do it when something extraordinarily good or bad happens?

And where’s the line? Are there boundaries, safe zones, where you can escape the prying dead eyes of the deceased? Like the bathroom, maybe. Is my mother watching me sitting on the toilet taking a dump and beaming about what a big boy I am?

Is there a statute of limitations? For example, are these dead voyeurs watching over us forever? Or are we sentenced to a finite number years after their death to be subjected to their constant observation? And how large is this circle of voyeurs? Just your parents or does it go back multiple generations and include more watchers than your immediate family and closest friends?

In the interest of full disclosure, I’m an atheist and I don’t believe in the notion of an afterlife. But I’m genuinely interested in hearing from those who are believers. Do you believe that the souls of your deceased loved ones — your parents, grandparents, aunts, uncles, and closest friends — are looking down at you, watching what you’re doing day in and day out?

I’m not trying to be an asshole. I really want to know what you believe. Tell me in the comments or write your own post and link it back to this post.

Thanks!

It seems the only place l can now go to get this, that and the other is your digs dude! I arrive and find out you are asking if my Dad up above is watching me strangling the monkey?

By the way l have tagged you for a bit of Q&A https://aguycalledbloke.blog/2018/12/14/q-and-a-tag-come-chat-with-me/

So, do l believe in that?

No, not that anything but that, l have beliefs but not the traditional set, it all borders down on the parts of the brain we don’t use and for some people that % is way higher!

I am agnostic, used to be an athiest but my card expired, so now l have gone for a bit of 50/50 🙂

I saw the tag and I’ll get to it probably tomorrow. As to what your Dad sees, that’s between you and him, so get a grip on yourself to make sure you’ve got matters well in hand.

I had a boyfriend who believed that aliens in spaceships might be watching us, taking notes, laughing, or whatever. It might be more or less wacko than the ghosts, idk.

I’m always struggling with this – I believe they are around but they disintegrate when they enter my bedroom – like a no go zone especially for deceased parents. lol

What if they go into a waiting room until they can be sorted into the right zones for re-living? What if before they get sorted, they have to account for all the ‘stuff’ they got up to in the most recent life? What if at the first even where the choice was against the professed principles of the inner person, it was a trip to purgatory to cogitate the matter until there came an answer or a potential solution?

Excellent story fodder, because I can believe in anything I want to, within the confines of the moral of the story …

Ghosts – I wish someone had warned me about [this] and [that] and kept me in (or out) of [here] or [there].

I don’t know why it matters what we believe; we will find out because we all die, but the journey of life will be all the more interesting if we maintain an attitude of query, and maybe even a concern for accountability …

I’ll take my chances, and the occasional caning, for the choices I made. So, whether there’s more or not, I’m ready to face the music, the judge, and the jury of my peers. Maybe (just give me a minute to dig this hole, okay?).

Did you ever see the movie “Defending Your Life”? Your first few sentences in your comment summarized the plot of that movie. As far as I’m concerned, it doesn’t matter WHAT we believe, but I am curious WHY people believe what they believe. And do they seriously believe that someone is watching over them from above?

Never seen the movie, but there’s a lot of talk about ‘the big waiting room’ (some oldies call the nursing homes that name – with dread). It’s a common theme.
I think part of the human condition is to believe in something after death so we don’t fear it. I don’t fear it, but most people have some form of dream when it comes to talking about it, planning for it, discussing what happens beyond it.
I do believe that the energy that makes us does what all energy does – it transforms from one state to another, and I don’t know what that other is, but I’m willing to find out. One day. Not quite yet – got a few more stories to tell.

It’s interesting to me that people dread death, but then, when a loved one dies, they say that he or she is in “a better place.”

And we are always honest with ourselves – and don’t hide from anything, and we’re willing to discuss things without becoming emotionally involved, and … how to reconcile a person’s facades?
No answer to that one. On your own, ‘dango.

A thought that has been roaming around my head for years!!! Do I need to cover up when coming out of the shower? Do I have to sleep with PJ’s on? Should I stop walking around in my underwear? Maybe that’s why I have spirits wandering in my house 😉

Doesn’t matter what I think….and to be honest it is too late at night for me to think…I need sleep.

Ecc 9:5,10 – I read that for the first time when I was around five and it seemed very clear and self-explanatory to me. I have never questioned it’s simple straightforward wording.

Wow, provocative question. As an omnist (someone who sees beauty and truth in all religions but does not follow any one exclusive path) I know that most religions have their various versions of ancestors and afterlives. Do I personally believe that my parents are watching me? No. I couldn’t really live my life if I believed they were. By the same token, if I’m in an old house where “presences” or “ghosts” are felt (usually only by me) I am definitely grabbing my jar of salt and casting a good warding on my bedroom threshold. 😉 btw, this obsession about masturbating is so Freudian that I’m not touching it. Pun intended. 😉

Sometimes I think it’s possible (but there is no interaction* and I don’t want there to be). I can’t give you full definitions of who exactly, or how many generations — if it were possible, or if it were or is so. The purpose would be learning and understanding… not judging reminiscent of parental or patronizing reprimands (and it would be more about the essence of the soul rather than simple voyeurism). Could have something to do with knowing as we are now known (although that hope in First Corinthians is mostly about bigger matters than a family member here or there, I do think our lives and each person are part of the whole).

[I wonder what show you’ve been watching, but something seemingly sappy like “God Friended Me” is more likely to grate on my nerves than to feel comforting or fun.]

I don’t say someone who has died is in a better place. I just understand the loss. And I don’t really know that a person who has passed away is currently conscious.

I do believe, for instance, that my dad will be conscious beyond the day of his death. I just don’t know when that kicks in. (I don’t think anyone knows.)

        * Really, this wording “depends” on whether or not something like sitting together (in regular life) in a room without talking or directly communicating is interacting due to enjoying each other’s company and (for lack of am better word) aura or presence.

i think we turn into an altered energy form when we pass over. do you really think that being in a form of energy that can do or go wherever is going to care about what anyone is doing down here? once we pass over we’ll be able to find our loved ones or they will find us. however it works on the other side, we do our things, including those naughty and/or embarrassing things without fear of being voyed on by the other side…..

I don’t think I ever really believed that my husband was watching over mean; I just hoped that he was…..accepting that someone you loved is no longer here is incredibly hard.

The moment I started reading this, I had a hideous mental view of leering faces watching everything I do from the clouds … and idea so horrible that were I not already a non believer, would have probably thrown me right over that edge. Oh. My. God. Anything but THAT.
