Each week I will pose what I think is a provocative question. By provocative, I don’t mean a question that will cause annoyance or anger. Nor do I mean a question intended to arouse sexual desire or interest.
What I do mean is a question that is likely to get you to think, to be creative, and to provoke a response. Hopefully a positive response.
This week’s provocative question came up while I was watching “The Late Show with Stephen Colbert” a few weeks ago. Colbert was talking with astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson and mentioned that in college he was taking a philosophy course and the final exam consisted of just one question:
“Is it better to know or is it better to not know?”

Was the interview you watched between Stephen Colbert and Neil deGrasse Tyson before or after the latter being investigated for sexual misconduct?

I sometimes wonder, from my younger days before marriage, if any of my female friends/dates would consider my behavior toward them to have been inappropriate.

I think maybe a fourth or so of guys around the time I started college would’ve been okay-to-great doing a number of the things that are clearly wrong now (so to speak — although they were wrong then), even rape. Maybe half would’ve been confused about the whole matter, and maybe a fourth would’ve been knights shining brightly.

This is rather mild, but I remember going to a dance in high school with a guy I hardly knew. He was angry that I wasn’t kissing him — a proper “thank you” I guess.
If he needed more of a thank you than “Thank you” for going to a dance (that he asked me to, presumably because he wanted to go with me), well… Whatever.

Nope. I don’t think there were roofies back then. My only option was alcohol. And no, I never got a girl drunk enough to get them to let me do anything inappropriate.

Just watched the interview. Interesting to see they flipped roles. I would hazard a guess they both ‘knew’ what was about to hit the fan since it was filmed a couple of days before the news was made public and the news was announcing an official decision, which means it was discussed behind closed doors for a while. The question is a good one for that particular situation… and Stephen Colbert is a very intelligent and astute man.

I want to know what I’ll need for the journey – clothes, hints about how to prepare myself; but I do not want to know what will happen – leave that up to happenstance and adventure.

Marilyn I tried to respond to the comment about your dog at your site but it wouldn’t let me. What I said was it’s a good thing his has a heavy coat and that Chauncey had to wear a coat out in the winter.
