Song Lyric Sunday — Last Time

This week Helen Vahdati chose the theme “last” for her Song Lyric Sunday prompt. Naturally, the song “The Last Time” by The Rolling Stones came to mind.

“The Last Time” was the first of The Rolling Stones songs to be written by Mick Jagger and Keith Richards. It was recorded at RCA Studios in Hollywood, California in January 1965 and reached number 9 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 that year. It was inspired by a 1955 gospel song called “This May Be The Last Time” by The Staple Singers. The Stones changed the meaning of the song, turning it into a stern message to a girl that she’d better change her ways or he’d be gone. The Staples Singers’ version had a more uplifting message and was much more spiritual.

There was some controversy in that many people believed that The Stones ripped the song off from the Staple Singers and should have compensated them because it was based on their version of the song.

Here are the lyrics to “The Last Time.”

Well I told you once and I told you twice
But ya never listen to my advice
You don’t try very hard to please me
With what you know it should be easy

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don’t know, oh no, oh no

Well, I’m sorry girl but I can’t stay
Feelin’ like I do today
It’s too much pain and too much sorrow
Guess I’ll feel the same tomorrow

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don’t know, oh no, oh no

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don’t know, oh no, oh no

Well I told you once and I told you twice
That someone will have to pay the price
But here’s a chance to change your mind
‘Cause I’ll be gone a long, long time

Well this could be the last time
This could be the last time
Maybe the last time
I don’t know, oh no, oh no

Last time baby
To say no more
Baby I don’t know
Well I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
Well, I don’t know
