A popular blogger I follow, Di, at Pensitivity101, wrote this post asking what makes a “good post.” And at the end of her post, which was a very good post, she asked these questions:
- What do you think makes a good post on your blog?
- Do you have a favorite?
- What do you prefer to write about?
- What do you like to read on other people’s blogs?
- What attracts you to follow a blogger?
Since Di said that she was interested to know what we think, I thought I’d tell her…and you.
What do I think makes a good post on my blog?
Well, all modesty aside, I like to think every post I write is a “good” post. However, I guess it depends upon how you define “good.” If good means a post that gets the most views — which I don’t actually believe is what defines a “good post” — then my “goodest” post since I started this blog would be this post, titled “Better Than Sex,” although it’s really about blogging and not about sex.
Do I have a favorite?
I’ve published more than 1,900 posts in the almost 18 months I’ve had this blog and it’s nearly impossible for me to pick out one specific post that is my favorite. So I asked my wife and she thought my post about manscaping was her favorite.
What do I prefer to write about?
As my tag line states, my post is about “random musings on life, society, and politics.” But I also really enjoy writing flash fiction and responding, often with flash fiction, to word and photo prompts.
What do I like to read on other people’s blogs?
Pretty much the same things I write about on my blog. I like to see the different ways in which other bloggers have interpreted the same photo and word prompts that I respond to. There are so many truly creative bloggers out there and I’m so impressed with what they write. And, of course, I enjoy hearing how other bloggers perceive what is going on in the world that we all share.
What attracts me to follow a blogger?
I like to be entertained, informed, stimulated, and distracted. I like bloggers who are witty, who are articulate, who use proper grammar and punctuation, who know the difference between fact and opinion, and who have something to say.
I currently follow about 150 blogs and I try to read as many as I have time to read each day. If I had more time, I’d follow more.

Great answers. I was hesitant to answer the last question since I follow so many different types of blogs but I still have a preference. I get accused a lot of not leaving enough likes or comments and, to be honest, those accusations hurt but I guess I understand. I follow more than a thousand blogs and I guess if I could split myself into thousands of people I might be able to satisfy people’s wants but I can’t. So, it is the way it is. Great answers!

Where do you find the time to post as often as you do and to keep up with more than a thousand blogs? I have trouble keeping up with 150. I only follow blogs that I actually intend to read, and many of the bloggers I follow post multiple times a day.

I read almost everyone’s posts. I am sure I miss a few, especially in the six hours I am sleeping, but I try to catch up on those during the day. Not everyone posts daily so that helps. I think that’s why I feel like I have become lazy. I read the post, then move on. If it really struck me, then I comment. I don’t mean to be rude, but I think some people take it that way. I do enjoy reading almost everyone I follow. I have unfollowed a few though because their content just didn’t suit me after a while. I have said before though that I am a selfish reader. I post a lot. Some don’t like that. I was actually asked if I understood quality over quantity. Rude! I write because I want to. Some days I only get five or six posts (those days I feel lazy though), but October I started averaging about 10-11 a day. I know people may only read one or two. In fact I have 3 views per visitor. Hopefully they like what they read. I am a fast reader though and fill my days with the blog, my other writing and reading. Pretty happy right now actually. I am rediscovering a lot of things I used to like to do but hadn’t done in a long time. I don’t really talk much about me, but I’m seeing the change. Some of the people I used to follow have stopped blogging, which is why I am always on the lookout for more to follow. More to read 🙂 Except poets…I have a lot of poets I follow and honestly, I don’t get a lot of what they write, but it takes a lot of work to write poems. My hats off to them. In case you’re wondering, I am a person that is/was always on the go. Since I can’t do that anymore between living where I am and having a kid that hates going out, I am always on the go online. lol

Thanks for responding and providing some great answers. Like you, I like the variety of responses to word and photos prompts. Some angles are ones I would never have thought of and I find that starts me thinking as well as seeing things differently. 🙂

Like yourself, I follow about 150 blogs, some of which are dormant and which probably ought to be taken off…but I followed ’em in the first place because they contributed something interesting or unique, and I live in hope they’ll get the blogging ‘bug’ again. Your answers, as always, were erudite, to the point and lively. Thanks!

Does proper punctuation mean that you can only use one space after the end of a sentence?

I still like to try and get two spaces after a colon (although that seems to get corrected). I’ve given up on the two spaces after each sentence.

That is a preference more than a rule, but a preference I STRONGLY support.

I think the passion of the writer makes me want to read them it doesn’t always have to be something I’m interested in but now and again I find myself drawn into a blog that I would never have thought I would enjoy yet here I am reading about the trials and tribulations of small town America or looking at photos of somebody’s back garden in Hong Kong

Good answers. I too could not pick a favorite post. I do however have a question that your answers brought up… where do you find out how many blogs you follow? Is it a stats feature? Or maybe it is only available for paid memberships? I don’t recall seeing that stat before.

If you go to your Reader and then to Followed Sites and hit “manage,” it should tell you the number of blogs you follow before listing each one.
