Thanksgiving at our house is never like that Norman Rockwell painting. Not even close.
It’s always a struggle trying to meet everyone’s dietary needs. My daughter is a vegetarian. My son’s girlfriend is vegan. My son doesn’t care for turkey. He prefers Cornish hens. My wife prefers duck. I hate duck. My daughter’s boyfriend likes to have lamb chops for Thanksgiving. Seriously?
Everyone loves sweet potato soufflé except me. I loathe sweet potatoes. Everyone loves pecan pie except me. I can’t stand pecan pie. Nor pumpkin pie. And who the hell came up with jellied cranberry sauce? My perfect Thanksgiving would be munching on Buffalo chicken wings dipped in blue cheese dressing, drinking a bottle of beer, and watching football.

Written for this month’s Tell Me a Tale in EXACTLY 120 Words prompt. The challenge is to write about what you will be doing on Thanksgiving day.
Menu planing would be a nightmare on thanks giving!

Both my wife and daughter are total foodies, and even the missus admits that our daughter has surpassed her. When our daughter can visit from California can visit (after nearly being burned out for the last two years running) on ‘Turkey Day,’ she’s totally in charge of the menu. Every year except for last year, I barbecue the turkey on my trusty Weber, but the previous Thanksgiving, one of my sons hosted the event at his house and used a Traeger, which was pretty good.
The only thing I don’t like is cranberry sauce, but other than that, I’m a traditionalist (except I’m not into any sort of sports I have to watch). Of course, mashed potatoes are replaced by smoothly blended cauliflower. which is actually a lot better than it sounds.
My son will have his children again, so we’ll have three generations at the table for this coming holiday, which is tons of fun. It’s even more fun on Passover, but that’s another story.
As an aside, we occasionally have Mu Shu Duck (not for Thanksgiving), but it takes two days at least to prepare. Well worth the wait, though.

I love Thanksgiving and quite enjoy the cooking. Best part of the day is watching the Dallas Cowboys 🙂👍

Uh oh. I am more of a Washington Redskins fan than a Cowboys fan.

I like cauliflower, as a replacement for mashed potatoes and in other ways.
I also like all* the Thanksgiving foods (including mashed potatoes).
I like duck, too. Have made a duck with cherries dish for Rosh Hashanah.
* I find other ways to include cranberry sauce as I don’t care for that much either.
Cornish hens are yummy; don’t mind lamb either. But traditional Turkey is the thing for the day.
I hear that one of my sons is dating a … I think vegetarian (maybe vegan). Maybe we’ll meet her on the holiday.

At least you could try some flatbread and lentils for me and say to your daughter see I’m trying vegan for you…

I share your feelings, but the kid needs a family.

Excellent response in exactly 120 words!
Your experience echoes through so many families at Thanksgiving. There was a time when my sister was vegetarian and my daughter was vegan. I hope to never have another bite of tofurky again. 🙂

It’s always a challenge at Thanksgiving when you have a bunch of people, all with different tastes/needs, together.

I just now caught that there is an additional piece of writing under the cranberry cylinder. I like chicken wings any week of the year. And that reminds me I have wanted to ask if people like one flavor of wings or a variety when going some place like Buffalo Wild Wings. Sounds like you enjoy the traditional Buffalo flavor. (I also like blue cheese rather than ranch dip with those — from whichever establishment.) The honey mustard bourbon is good, and I like the habanero flavor (these from BWW); Caribbean Jerk, Asian Zing. I’m sure they’re all yummy.

I’m not a fan of duck. Too gamey for me.
