That’s why I chose WP. org, where I can control what I want to appear on my pages. I started with WP.com some years ago, when I first started to learn WP. When I saw things like these and others, I quit.

Unfortunately, they are trying to take control (unbelievable)! They are the same company, but it looks like they are getting more money from .com with these type of things and many more other things.

For example, I cannot participate in these challenges if I don’t have a .com account (there is a free option for now, but who knows for how long)…

And also, there are some features that even if I am on .org, I have to have take from .com, otherwise I cannot have them and they seem to be important – one of them is this dam Jetpack

When I will have more time I’ll try to understand how to get around this Jetpack who’s trying to make you pay an account with .com

Anyway, it is much better to be on your own with .org. I have a lot of experience in web design starting from 1915… and I know what I’m saying.

You are right – they are very annoying!

I pay for the “personal” plan on .com, which is supposed to make my site ad-free!

I paid for an upgrade so ads wouldn’t appear. Felt like probably no one would click on that stuff anyway and maybe WordPress should get something for all they provide.

I did too. I have what they call the “personal” plan, and eliminating the ads was the primary driver for my doing so.

    @XingfuMama

Right this is their point: they want you to PAY more!

Of course these are ads they get money from – they are NOT doing this for nothing.

… and even though not too many click on them there are still some who do.

Same with the Google ads I inserted in purpose on my sites – Google is getting now gritty and inserts way too may ads that became annoying, but some people still click on them, and I get a VERY little percentage out of this… 😦

… There is a whole discussion around these ads, and it depends ( in the case you have the choice) on what you want to achieve… many prefer to get some little extra income out of them, and… why not?

I never thought of my blog as a revenue generator. It’s purely a hobby, so I opted to upgrade to get rid of the ads and don’t have any interest in Google ads. I’d probably need tens of thousands of readers to make any real money off my blog, anyway.

It is not easy… but you could… Don’t worry they do it instead 🙂

I pay for my .com on WP and my friend doesn’t, but neither of us have ads on our site. I believe there is an option you can click that makes your site ad free.

Not if you don’t upgrade. If such an option existed, I would have selected it under the free plan. But I think they don’t put ads on blogs with relatively few followers. I don’t know if that applies to your friend.

On the personal, it is ad free. On the premium, you can choose to monetize your site by including ads. I chose not to. If people have ads on their sites it is because they are being paid to do so, I believe. Don’t know what else monetize would mean.

You don’t earn revenue from ads that appear on the free site. That all goes to WordPress. I don’t know what the deal is with the premium or business plans vis-a-vis opting in or out of ads or generating revenue for the blogger.

I have the premium account and it gives me the opportunity to monetize, which seems as though it means advertisers will pay me to run ads on my site.. but perhaps it means I can charge people to read it. Either way, I have no interest in doing so. I, too, hate those ads. It seems like we could have the option of not seeing offensive ones. Perhaps if enough people complained they would withdraw that one. There is a Facebook video of a woman struggling to put on that device and getting trapped as it rolls up and having to cut it off. It’s hilarious. Perhaps you should put a link to it on your blog in protest!

Pay Per Click (PPC), also called Cost Per Click (CPC), is the easiest form of monetization for a website/blog. PPC, as the name says, is pay per click advertising. You post the ads on your blog and get paid if someone clicks on it.Apr 24, 2017

I AM grossed out by these adds. I was going to say something because they are so distracting. People create beautiful post and then there’s fat stomachs flapping at the bottom ICk! Sad 😞
I pay the extra $20 a year to be add free which seems like extortion. But we do get a lot for very little.
    Thanks for bringing this up.

I can’t help but wonder who would click on an ad which depicts a badly drawn, flabby cartoon belly….
