When Rory, over at A Guy Called Bloke, rolled out his latest “Game On” questions about fashion, I wasn’t going to play because I may be one of the least fashion-conscious men you could ever meet. But then I figured why not? So here are my “drab-fashionista” responses.
Q1] How important is color in your life?
Back in my hippie days, when I wore flowered and tie-died shirts, Day-Glo ties, and bell-bottom jeans, colorful clothes were very important to me.
Today, I wear mostly blues, browns, and grays. My favorite color is drab.
Q2] What is most favorite color to wear?
Blue, as in blue jeans.
Q3] Is there a color that you wear that brings the best out in you and in others – in so far as compliments?
Seriously? No one ever compliments me on my clothes, either color or style.
Q4] Are you a person who likes to overdress for the day or are you a follower of the credo, less is more?
If I could get away with it, I’d be a nudist. That’s how much I believe in “less is more.”
PQ5] What are five of your best items of clothing that you simply couldn’t be without? [and l don’t mean underwear/socks]
My dark blue jeans, my light blue jeans, my blue chambray work shirts, my sneakers, and my sweatshirts and sweatpants.
Q6] Do you dress for the season, as in color wise, or just throw on whatever is warm and practical?
I live in San Francisco, where the daytime temperatures rarely reach 80 during the summer or drip below the mid-50s in the winter. So my “wardrobe,” such that it is, is pretty much the same all year long.
PQ7] If you were going for an evening out and the dress code was ‘smart casual’ what is your ideal outfit and why?
I’d probably decline to attend. But if I had to go, I’d probably put on a sport shirt and khakis.
Q8] If you were having to attend an important meeting or appointment and the dress code was smart – what would your outfit be then?
The good news for me is that I’m retired, so I never have to attend important — or even unimportant — meetings.
Q9] How many pairs of shoes do you own, and what is the breakdown [as in casual, smart, evening, leisure]
A pair of sneakers, a pair of black dress shoes that I haven’t put on in three years, a pair of comfy slippers, and a pair of over-the-shoes rain boots. That’s it.
Q10] Do you have classic clothing, or classic items in your wardrobe that you have had for years and never go out of fashion if so name three?
Because my wardrobe is so limited, the items I wear usually wear out before they can be declared to be “classic.”
Q11] Are you into plain colors, wild colors, or outlandish designs, or a mixture, and which do you favor more?

PQ12] Do you have a favorite quote with regards fashion or design – if so what is it?
Comfort trumps style. (Please excuse me for using the word “trump” in my response. I was hoping to keep this apolitical.)
Q13] Knee high socks, ankle socks, shin socks or no socks?
White sweat — or crew — socks.
Q14] Can you see the connection between color and music and, if so, does it influence your dress code for the day in any way?
Music doesn’t influence the style or color of the clothes I wear nor do the color or style of the clothing I wear influence the music I listen to.
PQ15] If you are going out somewhere special and want to listen to some music to put you in the mood whilst getting dressed up, what do you listen to? [Provide link please]
Classic rock. Take your pick.
Q16] How often do you buy new clothing for the season or the year?
Whenever my existing clothing gets holes in them. Nothing seasonal about it.
Q17] Remember tie-dye from tthe 70s? Was it a thing you followed, bought into, or worse, how do you feel about it now?

Q18] What is the brightest colored item of clothing you have in your wardrobes/drawers?
A pink dress shirt that I haven’t worn in three years.
Q19] What is the most expensive item of clothing that you have in your wardobe? How often do you actually wear it?
Probably a blue, pinstriped suit for work that I bought maybe five years ago and haven’t put on since I retired three years ago. Anyone interest in buying a 42-long men’s suit?
PQ20] Are you deleting any questions, if so which ones?
Nope.
Q21] Is being ‘fashionable’ important to you, or is being comfortably attired more so?
As I said earlier, comfort always trumps fashion.
So, there you have it. When it comes to clothing, I am the personification of dressing down and the devotee of drab. I told you so.

I haven’t heard of smart or smart casual before.
I recently had an e-mail conversation with someone I’d never met before (an organizer) as to whether an event I was to be attending was business casual (a Friday evening), come-as-you-are, or somewhat dressy. Does that word date me?

I assume “smart” means dressy and “smart casual” is the same as business casual. But I could be wrong. In any event, I dress stupid.

“I dress stupid.” Lol. My mother laughed once when she saw what I was wearing. (I responded, “I’m glad you like it.”) On a casual (but not sweat pants or jeans) day, I can be quite colorful – – which was the case that day.
The answer via email was “a little dressy — like a cocktail party.” So I wore a dress with a matching shawl (not knit, the same chiffon as the dress). It’s a muted purple with hints of yellow/gold and pink/peach flowers. Last minute, I decided to make it business casual by wearing comfortable but coordinating sneakers (instead of dressy sandals)… maybe not quite up to the par of business casual. But I was more dressed up than almost anyone.

I dress seasonally in color and style and fabric. However, it used to be unacceptable to wear even an off-white half the year. Yet, a favorite pair of boots I’ve had for decades are cream-to-white leather and almost knee-high (so, meant for fall; I wear in winter too).

I like variety. Some of my favorite clothes are a warm grey with a slight brown tint. One of those is a classic long almost berber wool coat/wrap. I like texture.
I also like things with embroidery, etc.
Q18] Brightest colored item in my wardrobe is yoga pants in vivid orange, pink, purple, white — I noticed after buying it, it’s the coloring I favored most for a bikini as a kid.

Interesting questions about color and music and clothing. I don’t think I connect color and music. If I were to play music while dressing, it would likely be a Pandora station or Spotify list including Al Di Meola… actually, I might connect that to deep red/maroon/garnet.

Morning fandango – brilliant answers – loved the consideration towards a nudist camp and it reminded me of an ‘experience’ l encountered in my mid twenties. I think l will write about that today. Very similiar to my style, l feel. You call it drab, l call it grunge.
You are quite right with the terminology, but l do wonder if it is a UK/USA thing – over here we use the terms – smart casual, casual, smart. I have always been somewhat confused by them, when younger, l didn’t dress in anything but smart, and these days l have to ask Suze, so what is smart casual to say just casual or smart?
