“Whoever wins this game of tic-tac-toe gets to decide,” Hal said.
“Fine,” responded Anita. “I’m very good at tic-tac-toe, you know. I almost never lose.”
“You think you’re good at tic-tac-toe, do you?” Hal said. “Well, my dear, you’ve met your match.”
“Game on, then,” Anita said.
For almost an hour, Hal and Anita played game after game of tic-tac-toe, each game ending in a draw. At the end of each draw game, Anita would call out “cat’s game!”
“Why do you keep saying ‘cat’s game’ when nobody wins?” Hal asked.
“That’s what my dad used to call it,” Anita said. “Something about a cat chasing its tail as if it were a mouse, but never being able to catch it.”
As they were talking, Hal managed to get three O’s in a diagonal row. “I win!” he shouted out.
“Okay,” said Anita. “So what’s your decision?”
Hal shrugged his shoulders and said, “I’ve decided to let you decide.”
