#FOWC — Quite Preposterous

“That’s absurd. Absolutely ridiculous. Downright foolish. Incomprehensibly stupid. Completely ludicrous. Even farcical. Quite laughable, actually. Almost comical. Totally nonsensical. You must be insane. Trump as President of the United States? Preposterous.”

The above quote was attributed to most Americans in the fall of 2016.

Written for today’s Fandango’s One-Word Challenge, “preposterous.”

I’m not proud of this, but in the summer of 2016, during a heated discussion with friends on my back deck, and yes, whiskey was involved, but not too much, I was the lone voice predicting that, contrary to our ignorant, self-righteous assurance, he would win. How did I know, you ask? Because in my line of work, I have seen enough to be reasonably well-assured that there are not currently grounds to have much faith in the basic decency of Americans and our tendency to act in our best interests.

My wife also predicted that, despite prevailing “conventional wisdom,” Trump would win. We both cried when it actually happened.

I watched the news on election night just long enough to know for sure there was no chance Hilary would pull an upset. Then I hung my head in disgust, finished my Evan Williams on the rocks, went to bed, and cried myself to sleep.
