Song Lyric Sunday — Time

Helen Vahdati’s Song Lyric Sunday prompt today is all about time. Her challenge is to write a song about seconds, minutes, and/or hours. But what are seconds, minutes, and hours other than markers of time?

And that brought me to the highly philosophical question that the band, Chicago, asked in their song, “Does Anybody Really Know What Time It Is?”

This song was included on Chicago’s 1969 debut album Chicago Transit Authority, but it wasn’t released as a single until 1970, after the band’s second album, Chicago (often called Chicago II), was released. It was written and sung by Robert Lamm.

According to Lamm, he was a teenager walking down the street in Brooklyn, New York where he grew up. He walked by a movie theater and there was an usher standing outside taking a cigarette break. Lamm said to him, “Hey man, what time is it?” and the guy said to Lamm, “Does anybody really know what time it is?”

Here are the song’s lyrics.

As I was walking down the street one day
A man came up to me and asked me what the time was that was on my watch, yeah
And I said

Does anybody really know what time it is (I don’t)
Does anybody really care (care about time)
If so I can’t imagine why (no, no)
We’ve all got time enough to cry

And I was walking down the street one day
A pretty lady looked at me and said her diamond watch had stopped cold dead
And I said

Does anybody really know what time it is (I don’t)
Does anybody really care (care about time)
If so I can’t imagine why (no, no)
We’ve all got time enough to cry

And I was walking down the street one day (people runnin’ everywhere)
Being pushed and shoved by people (don’t know where to go)
Trying to beat the clock, oh, no I just don’t know (don’t know where I am)
I don’t know, I dont know, oh (don’t have time to think past the last mile)
(Have no time to look around) And I said, yes I said (run around and think why)

Does anybody really know what time it is (I don’t)
Does anybody really care (care about time)
If so I can’t imagine why (no, no)
We’ve all got time enough to die

Everybody’s working (I don’t care)
I don’t care (about time)
About time (no, no)
I don’t care

It takes me back to when we played it in the pep band at high school basketball games.

Not caring and being apathetic does not help to contribute to the advancement of ideas or the advancement of humanity.

Nice trivia about the origin. Love a sarcastic usher :). Love the horns that Chicago is known for too.

The link in the post is not working. Could you check Sensei. I heard the song, sounds like something I would write, if I ever wrote a song that is.

I’m thinking he had something here. It is a great question, in my opinion. Great song! Thanks so much for sharing. 🙂
