“The thieves took everything except the dog,” Alex lamented.
“Buster is the only thing that matters,” Nate said, patting Buster on the head. “Everything else is just stuff. Buster is flesh and blood.”
“Yes, of course, and I’m happy that Buster is fine,” Alex said, “but the whole reason we got him was to be the shop’s guard dog. His presence was supposed to scare away the thieves and stop them from breaking in and robbing us blind.”
“We have insurance,” Nate said. “They’ll cover the loss.”
“Yes,” agreed Alex. “But you can be sure they’re going to raise our premiums. And as far as being a guard dog, Buster is a bust.”
“Alex,” Nate said, “look at this dog. He’s a sweetheart.”
“That’s my point,” Alex said. Yet when Buster came over to Alex and snuggled up to him, Alex couldn’t help himself. “Who’s a good boy?” he said, embracing Buster. “You’re a good boy. Oh yes you are.”
