Friday Fictioneers — Good As New

img_1380Herman saw the pair of old boots left on a ledge by a stone wall. He looked around, but saw nobody near to whom the boots might belong. A white sock was sticking over the top of one of the boots. He walked closer and found another sock stuffed inside the other boot. Herman removed his ragged shoes from his sockless feet, put on the clean socks he found in the abandon boots, put on the boots themselves, and walked away. They were slightly big for his feet, but we’re better than his crappy old shoes and no socks.

Well, they did look as if someone had left them behind, didn’t they? Sad that someone should be needy enough to need the old boots….

The worth of something is all relative depending on your circumstances.

I have done that also. I buy a bunch of tube socks and donate them to homeless shelters. There’s nothing better than warm, dry feet.

I like the way you treat Herman’s appropriation of the boots and socks in such a matter-of-fact way. It makes his need for them very real and tangible.

I hope someone left them intentionally like the towns that tie warm knit scarves to the trees in the park in cold weather…for anyone to take.

Seems like he’s happy with his find, hope the original owner didn’t want them but the socks imply he may have just gone for a paddle.

When opportunity knocks, one must take advantage.
And besides, maybe there were left there for the next person who found a need…
