“You’re not going to work today, are you?” she asked.
“Of course I’m going to work,” he answered. “Why wouldn’t I? It’s Thursday. It’s a workday.”
“Listen to yourself,” she said. “You’re sneezing, you’re coughing, your nose is running, you have a fever. How can you possibly go to work?”
“I have to,” he said. “I have a critical meeting today that will determine the future of the project I’ve spent the past four months working on.”
“Can’t you work from home,” she asked. “You know, do one of those webinar things that I’ve seen you do sometimes.”
“No, this meeting is too important.”
“Important enough for you to go in and possibly infect all of your coworkers with this horrible cold? Maybe you can reschedule it.”
“Yes, it’s that important. And no, I can’t reschedule it.”
He left for the office a few minutes later. Four hours later he walked through the door.
“You’re home early,” she said. “How did your presentation go?”
“It was going great,” he answered. “Until I vomited all over the conference room table.”
She smiled and said, “I don’t want to say I told you so, but….”

That’s why, when I was a manager way back when, I told my staff to stay home until they were symptom-free. I didn’t want them to expose everyone else to their germs.
