If you read my letter E entry for this A to Z Challenge, which you can read here if you missed it, you know that I have to renew my about-to-expire driver’s licence. And I also have to take an eye test as well as a written exam.
To that end, I set my alarm for six in the morning on Thursday and headed to the DMV early enough to avoid the long lines for which the DMV is infamous. Still, when I got there, there were already around 20 people in line ahead of me.
The doors finally opened and I got through the registration line with all of my paperwork completed by 8:30. I was given a number and told to take a seat and wait for my number to be called. But after an hour and a half of sitting, I was losing patience.
I walked up to a clerk and asked why it was taking so long. And that’s when I heard a dreaded word:
Yes, there was some sort of system glitch that was causing the delay. “Any estimate of when it might be fixed?” I asked.
“No.”
So then I said, “I’m just hear to take the written exam. Can’t I take it now while they’re trying to fix the glitch?”
“No.”
“Why not?”
Clearly annoyed with me, the woman explained, “You need to get your picture taken and you need to get a thumbprint scanned. Can’t do that when the system is down,”
“But why can’t I simply take the written exam to get that out of the way? Then I can have my picture taken and my thumbprint scanned later when the glitch has been fixed.”
“Can’t,” she said. “You need your thumbprint to sign on to the terminal in order to take the written exam, which ain’t actually written, but is on the computer system with the glitch.”
“So I’m just supposed to continue to wait indefinitely and hope that someone can fix the glitch?”
“Honey, you can stay or you can go,” she said. “Makes no never mind to me.”
So I left. No written exam. No eye test. No renewed driver’s license.
I hope the glitch is fixed when I go back to the DMV very early Monday morning.
I’d be irritated as ffffff… lol but what can we do against the glitch? no-thing 🙂 eh

You are like my husband; you expect processes to work or make sense. Poor things! I just enjoy the scenery until the “glitches” are fixed; the DMV is a prime place for people-watching.

That it is. But you can only take so much people-watching, right?

True. But at the DMV, you see ALL kinds of people!

Good luck. The DMV is probably the worst government agency for efficiency.

This reminds me of my work, and indeed life these days, we are at the mercy of computers and their glitches.

You can bet it was a computer glitch, we didn’t have glitches at such a high rate as we do now thanks to computers. Maybe we can program a computer to fix glitches!

Yes. That would be called artificial intelligence.

Someday I’m training my computer to read posts and reply for me and draw cartoons, then I won’t even have to go to WordPress, more me time!
