100WW — The Wall

0536C112-C8F4-45EB-9800-10B9F1F6EB9DA European history professor, George’s objective was to spend his year on sabbatical researching and writing a textbook on medieval architecture.

Shortly after his arrival, he went to explore the ruins of an 11th century castle near Rothenburg ob der Tauber. Most of the passageways were narrow and low with stone walls, but one of them opened up through a large, brick archway into an enormous, open-air chamber.

George lit his torch, walked to the wall opposite the arch, and read an inscription carved into one of the bricks. Surpringly, it was in English and read, “Open All Night.”
