Thanks But No Thanks

57441FE2-33F7-4EC3-9380-081F7928D4BAAs I said the last time someone nominated my blog for a blog award, it’s an honor just to be nominated. And it is. Most of us, even an introvert like me, appreciate it when some takes the time to recognize and acknowledge what we do.

My blogger friend Jim Adams over at A Unique Title For Me, got nominated for a well-deserved blog award. One of the rules for blog award nominations is to nominate X — where “X” can equal anywhere from five to twenty — other bloggers for that same award and notify them. My blog was one of the five he chose to nominate.

I don’t want anyone to think that I don’t appreciate your appreciation. I do. But I’ve had this blog for ten months and this latest award from Jim is my sixth blog award nomination. I’m beginning to feel like the Meryl Streep of blogging, for crissake.

So, I am officially announcing that, as of today, my blog is an award free blog. If you like my posts, then like my posts. If something I’ve written inspires you (or angers you) enough to comment on it, please do so. Reading and responding to comments from other bloggers is the best part of having a blog.

So thank you so much for stopping by and reading my blog. I hope you enjoy it and will continue to read and comment on my posts. But when it comes to nominating this blog for a blog award, thanks but no thanks.

Well, congrats! I used to cringe when I was nominated… It is a nice gesture and I truly did feel honored.
Sure, mention me or my blog if you like when nominating me, but telling me I have to do the same sounds more like a stipulation than an award.

Yes. It’s a lot of work to follow all the rules.

Agreed. I had a blog on another site several years ago and was flooded with awards at one time. I found that the awards were really traffic generators in disguise. Mr. X gives an award to a popular or rising blog. Mr. Y, the award recipient, posts the award with a reciprocal link back to the award presenter. Presto, Mr. X gets increased traffic on his blog when people click on the link from Mr. Y’s blog.
If I’m going to post a link to another blog or website, it’s because there’s useful info there, or it’s something I think is worth sharing… not because someone gave me an award.
Keep on doing what you’re doing!

I think I’ll do that too. I’ve gotten them the last two years and hate to repeat answers to the questions. You convinced me.🤗

I had some nominations early on when I started my blog and have to confess I didn’t know enough bloggers to pass it on at the time. A few subsequent ones I’ve felt awkward to a degree nominating anyone so I decided to throw it open to anyone who wishes to participate. I like the personal comments and interaction that way.

We all get there. An award is a nice thing. Twenty awards are a pain in the butt and become meaningless.

well can I interest you in the “really cool and totally useless out of this world blog award? There’s nothing to do..no questions to answer and ya never have to nominate anyone. You can find it on my page of blather….somewhere. LOL

    Hi,

I have a question as I am researching on what all these blog awards mean, and you sound like you know a lot about it.

I got one nomination once, was grateful but didn’t participate as I found the rules quite long and straining as I am going through health issues already and get stressed easily when things are requested / demanded of me.

Now I got a second nomination and participated, for one, because I only started blogging for certain reasons, one of which is exposing a multi-billion pound company that exploits staff with a smile and ruins people’s lives behind a well-oiled PR facade (until lately).

But I participated this time for greater exposure of the company and also because the blogger who nominated me I highly respect and love his blog and poems.

Having said all that, I agree, if there are awards, they should just be nominated and awarded and that’s it! I do feel as well that they seem more like a chain mail thing. On the other side it does have potential to discover some amazing bloggers and connect them with each other. I’m all for that.

But some questions that I keep searching in WordPress is,

    – Can anyone just take an award and kick off the awards?
    – Can anyone start a new type of award that doesn’t exist yet, or where do these awards have their origins?
    – And finally, people can just nominate anyone, but WHO decides which blogger actually gets the award??

I am still completely clueless how all this works and also remain ambivalent about this. I don’t really care about awards, and yet if it gives my blog and other bloggers exposure, it’s a good thing I guess. But I don’t force myself to participate.

Sorry, for the length, can’t keep it short! If anyone can link me to a site where I can find some answers to the above Qs… would appreciate.

    Happy Blogging,
    LNG

I’m no blog awards expert, but I’ll try to answer your questions.

      — Can anyone just take an award and kick off the awards?
I’m not sure what you mean by that. First of all, there really is no such thing as “winning” a blog award. You get nominated as a form of recognition and appreciation, but it’s not like the Oscars, where bloggers get nominated and one is deemed the winner.

      — Can anyone start a new type of award that doesn’t exist yet, or where do these awards have their origins?
Sure. All blog awards originated with some blogger who decided to recognize other bloggers by nominating them for an award. So feel free to create one of your own.

      — And finally, people can just nominate anyone, but WHO decides which blogger actually gets the award??
As I said, no one actually gets the award. They are merely nominated for an award and then they’re asked to “pay it forward” by nominating others for the same award.

For what it’s worth, I have declared my blog to be an “awards free” blog, but I still do get occasional nominations. I recognize the blogger who gave me the nomination and will happily answer any questions they pose, but I don’t pass on the nomination to other blogger.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Each blogger can choose how they wish to respond to nominations, but, overall, they are, as you said, like chain letters. But they are a good way to gain exposure as well.

Ok,thanks, that does answer all my Qs. I just looked at it as nominations as a prep to winning an award.

But I like that there is no obligation whatsoever. Would be great if the was an FAQ on it somewhere. Maybe once I know the ins and out I might post a FAQ on it, as new bloggers may be as confused as I am.

        Thank you for explaining.
