Song Lyric Sunday — Moonshadow

This week’s Song Lyric Sunday theme from Helen Vahdati is “shadow.”

I’ve always been a Cat Stevens fan, so naturally his song “Moonshadow” came to mind. I’m going to go out on a limb and predict that I’m not the only one who selects this song.

“Moonshadow” was written and performed by Cat Stevens. It was first released in the U.K. in 1970 as a single and in 1971 on his album “Teaser and the Firecat” in the U.S.

Cat Stevens, also known as Yusuf Islam and as Yusuf/Cat Stevens, wrote this song about finding hope in any situation. He felt that every moment in life is rich and unique, whether we are aware of it or not.

In a 2009 interview, Stevens said he was inspired to compose this song when he was on a holiday in Spain. As a kid growing up in London, he never got to see the moon on its own in the dark because of the bright city lights. But on a beautiful, clear night in Spain, he was standing on the edge of the water and the moon was glowing brightly. Suddenly he looked down and saw his shadow in the moonlight and thought it was cool, so he wrote about it.

Here are the song’s lyrics.

Oh, I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin and hoppin’ on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my hands, lose my plough, lose my land,
Oh if I ever lose my hands, Oh if… I won’t have to work no more.
And if I ever lose my eyes, if my colours all run dry,
Yes if I ever lose my eyes, Oh if… I won’t have to cry no more.

Yes I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

And if I ever lose my legs, I won’t moan, and I won’t beg,
Yes if I ever lose my legs, Oh if… I won’t have to walk no more.
And if I ever lose my mouth, all my teeth, north and south,
Yes if I ever lose my mouth, Oh if… I won’t have to talk…

Did it take long to find me? I asked the faithful light.
Did it take long to find me? And are you gonna stay the night?

I’m bein’ followed by a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Leapin’ and hoppin’ on a moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow
Moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow, moonshadow

Silver linings and a more upbeat sound for a nice change. Good one, even if it isn’t such easy things he’s referring to. Curious song for certain.
