How Much Is Too Much?

7165FBA8-F1D7-4283-9384-92084949C617Do I post too often?

I have been averaging three, sometimes four, posts a day lately. But this morning I read a post from a blogger, Cristian Mihai, who has more than 120,000 followers. His post is titled “The 7 Golden Rules of Blogging.” One of his seven rules: “Blog often enough, but not too often.”

Mihai wrote, “You need to find a balance here.” He went on to point out that “it’s pretty safe to assume that constantly posting more than once a day won’t work really well.”

Okay, here’s an extraordinarily successful blogger with more than 120,000 followers (compared to my blog’s 583 followers) who is essentially telling me that I post too many times a day.

Then I read an article in Forbes that advised, “If you post too infrequently, your audience will forget that you exist and you will quickly fade into the deep dark recesses of their minds. However, if you are posting too often, you will become a complete nuisance and they will dread seeing your posts overcrowding their feed.”

Oh my God! Do you dread seeing my posts in your WordPress reader? Am I a complete nuisance, unnecessarily filling up your email box and your reader with all of my posts?

But how do I go about posting less frequently? What prompts should I stop responding to? Should I curtail my flash fiction posts? Should I refrain from posting about the moron in the Oval Office?

Hmm. Maybe the first thing I should do to avoid being a nuisance is to stop whining about how often I post.

We have a similar pace… I say you keep things as they are 🙂 They’ve been working fine with me 🙂

Your speed of posting, not to mention the number of posts themselves, has increased Sensei. I complained about it before also, but only because I was concerned as you told that you before had become addicted to blogging..

I enjoy seeing you pop up in my reader, so I’ll ask you this:
    Q: do you enjoy blogging?
Q: do you enjoy the interaction via the comments.
    Q: do prompts inspire you?
Q: do you like what I write?
Ok, I slipped that one in because I post at least twice a day, sometimes as much as 7. It depends on how many prompts I participate in, if anything interesting (questionable bearing in mind it’s all about the weather just now) is going on around me, and the dog.
It also depends on how many people follow you, so that your posts go into their reader.
I haven’t quite managed the knack of combining two or more prompts in one post yet, and I don’t post on every prompt I see anyway.
I enjoy writing, about almost anything, and like the challenge of trying to take a different approach to photo prompts.
I confess to being a windbag on paper. My only concession is I try to keep my posts relatively short (500 words or thereabouts) which is why the limited 100 or 200 word challenges are the most fun.
Keep at it the way you are if you’re happy. There’ll be days when you don’t post at all for whatever reason, and days when you can’t seem to stop! 😀

I wonder the same thing – notice that when I don’t blog everyday my likes fall off, but to be honest when I see more than one or two posts from the same blog, I delete the excess – just don’t have the time.

I think you should do your own tbing. Do you want 120000 followers? Who has time for that?Unless the followers pay for their follow, and it’s his income base, why would you?
I love it when I see your icon pop up, and enjoy reading whatever you decide to post. Do what you want to do when you want.

lol I think it doesn’t matter how often you post, but the content is matter 🙂 once a day is a must, maybe 3 times a weeks is fine if too much work or need to relax 🙂 sometimes I’m blogging twice a day even 🙂 don’t see any problems…

I definitely post at least once daily. I suppose I’ll continue as long as I’m inspired.

I have yet to think “oh there’s that pesky Fandango again!”…do what you feel like doing. Stop trying to post the perfect number of posts..do what feels right to you. Those of us that read your posts don’t mind how many times a day or even a week that you post.

“Stop trying to post the perfect number of posts.” I thought I was posting the right number until I read that other blogger’s post and that article. Oh well. I will post however many times a day the urge strikes me, I guess.

Ha! I never feel this way about your posts! Lexi and I on the Life Bus are trying for 3 times a week – every now and then there may be 4 – not sure if this is enough or too much, time will tell!

I follow Mister 120K too but guess what? The golden rules of blogging are NOT “real” rules. They are opinions. If it ain’t broke, don’t fix it. Post away as much or as little as you like.

I find you a source of entertainment, especially your posts about the moron. Its your blog, do what you like, does it matter what other people think? So long as you are enjoying the writing process, go for it.

I love these kinds of posts about blogging. The blog I’m posting on now is one in a long line of blogs that have varying degrees of popularity. I can’t imagine what what it would be like to have 120,000 followers but one thing I have noticed that these people with very popular blogs seem to really delight in telling the rest of us how to blog. 🙂
I sometimes post more than once a day but often find posts I make early in the day tend to be overlooked and the later ones get more responses. Its hard to say why that is – it could be simply that the later post is more interesting.
I guess ultimately it depends on why you blog. Do you blog to get thousands of followers or do you blog because you feel a need to express to yourself? I would follow your own instincts rather than the advice of super blogger (unless of course you have aspirations to become a super blogger).

“Do you blog to get thousands of followers or do you blog because you feel a need to express to yourself?” Definitely the latter. Thanks.

You recently wrote about all of the effort involved in blogging and it does take a lot of time and effort. I never worry about how many LIKES I get and I am not concerned with how many followers I have. Of course I realize that these are perks that will encourage a blogger to keep going, but good writing comes from inspiration and I feel that you are a great writer, so in my opinion you should post as often as you desire, because your stories do entertain a lot of people.

Bull shit. Keep it down under five because you don’t want to be spam. 2, 3, 4, especially is they aren’t all the same is fine. IF they are all the same — then maybe you need rethink what you are doing — but that’s really a different subject. Unless you post so much that you really ARE spam, three or four posts are not excessive — as long as they aren’t all the same stuff.

I never (knowingly) post the same thing multiple times. Why would anyone post the same stuff he/she has already posted?

I personally write more for myself than an audience. Writing can be therapeutic. The views, likes and followers are encouraging numbers to see but not what I am here for. As a reader of blogs, I may get behind reading when there are a lot of posts, but as long as they are unique and continue to delight I will read as many as you (or any blogger) can write. Keep ’em coming! 🙂

I, too, write mostly for myself. That said, it’s like that old philosophical question about a tree falling in the woods. If there’s no one around to hear it fall, does it really make a sound? It’s nice to know that there are others out there who hear my tree when it falls.
