Suddenly is rarely a good word. It means that something happened unexpectedly and without warning.
“Ralph was feeling fine and then he suddenly died.”
“The tornado appeared so suddenly that people didn’t have time to seek shelter.”
“Suddenly shots were fired and chaos ensued.”
Most people don’t like things to happen “all of a sudden.” We tend to prefer some degree of predictability. We like to feel that we exercise at least a small modicum of control — or at least influence — over what goes on in our immediate sphere.
But “suddenly” takes away our control and influence. And unfortunately, “suddenly” has not so suddenly become a way of life in our modern society. Bad things happen suddenly and there’s little we can do to prepare for suddenly.
All that said, when my time is up and I die, I hope it happens suddenly.

But don’t you love the way your body can mysteriously react to sudden events in a millisecond? Seemingly faster than you brain? I used to play a bit of cricket (I dare say that doesn’t mean much to you) and part of that game involves flinging yourself left or right to catch balls travelling at you at high speed from short distances. Sometimes you feel as though you’ve caught a ball before you’ve even seen it.
But I take your point about all of this coming to an abrupt end one day. ‘Living wills’ ? ‘Do not resuscitate clause’? Nah, I might as well get every last breath out of this crumbling machine.
But as for the other wills – why bother? I won’t care what happens after I’m dead. I’ll be dead.

The only purpose of a will is for your heirs who outlive you (kids, spouse, etc.) for distribution of whatever assets remain after you’re gone. If you have any…or if you care.

My point is, I suppose, that whilst I might care now, I won’t care then. I won’t ‘anything’ then. So a will is, weirdly, a sort of plan for a future that, by definition, will never happen.
