Photo Challenge —Screaming Silence

The theme for this week’s WordPress Photo Challenge is “silence.” We are asked, “What does silence look like? Show us your take in a photograph.”

A few years back, my wife and I visited Arches National Park outside of Moab, Utah. Arches National Park offers the largest density of natural sandstone arches in the world. It is spectacular.

I took a bunch of pictures on that trip and below are just three such pictures. Each one, to me, screams “silence.”

America’s National Parks are our country’s greatest natural treasures. If you haven’t visited them, you should.

And do it soon, before the Trump administration sells them all off to developers.

Anything like desert, mountains, rivers, lakes, shores — they all seem to say “silent” — though none of them are. There are lots of sounds. Natural sounds, but still sounds. Birds. The rushing water. Wind. A distant engine. I’m not sure there is any truly silent place anywhere. Unless you have no hearing. Then, there really IS silence.

I suppose I consider the sounds of nature to be a silence worth hearing.
