A Good Egg

Most people who knew him called him “Eggman.” It wasn’t because he was obsessed with eggs, although eggs were among his favorite foods. It also wasn’t because his livelihood had anything to do with eggs, although he did work in the dairy department at the local grocery store.

There were two reasons people called him “Eggman.” First, his name was Zachary Eggerly. So for most of his life, people called him “Eggs” or, after he grew up, “Eggman.”

Second, his torso was egg- shaped. He had narrow shoulders, a large mid-section, a big butt, and ample hips. Some thought he was pear-shaped, but most described him as egg-shaped.

But rather than being upset with being called “Eggman,” Zachary took it in stride and even leveraged it. For example, whenever he pronounced the word “exactly,” he would always say “egg-zachary.” And instead of telling a joke, he’d say he had a “yoke” to tell you.

His favorite love-making position was the missionary position and he would occasionally say to a women with whom he was having sex, “The yoke’s on you.” Surprisingly, it rarely killed the mood.

So, yes, Eggman was well-liked and thought of by those who knew him as a good egg. But deep down inside, beneath his lighthearted shell, there must have been something rotten lurking. So when it came out that he’d had a mental and emotional crackup, it came as a shock to his friends and acquaintances.

Written for today’s one-word prompt, “egg.”

It was egg-citing reading your egg-squisite post, as it made me come out of my shell for a good laugh. It was egg-sactly what I needed and it made me egg-static and that is no eggs-aggeration.

A bit scrambled in the head? A little fried in the sun? But I can see he could poach a good yoke.
