The Circle Game

The older I get, the more I feel that the years are going by as quickly as revolving doors or merry-go-rounds.

In fact, I’m reminded of Joni Mitchell’s classic song, “The Circle Game.” You know the lyrics, right? Sing along:

And the seasons they go round and round
And the painted ponies go up and down
We’re captive on the carousel of time
We can’t return we can only look
Behind from where we came
And go round and round and round
In the circle game

If you’re not familiar with this song, take a moment to listen. You won’t regret it.

Written for today’s one-word prompt, “carousel.”

At least I am looking at my own face of yesteryear.. To those who live in the past.. You are looking at your own butt.. Thank me later for giving you a reality check.. Be more like Fandango, Sensei..

Just because you occasionally look back doesn’t mean you lose sight of what’s right in front of you.

Damn the comma changed the meaning completely. Remove it Sensei.. I meant be more like you who live in today and give a passing thought to the past, not like those who live in today, but their mind is stuck in past.. Sorry..

Nice post. A child’s journey to adulthood tells us it is OK to look at your past, but you can’t change it.

True. The past is the past, what’s done is done, and there are no do-overs.

Looking back is only good when it helps you move ahead.
I love Joni Mitchell… you’re right about years flying by as we get older… is age like MPH? The older we get the faster we go? Hell, I feel like summer just started and here it is a week into August already. How I miss the days of long summers when I was a kid.
    Nice post.

Thanks. Yes, I think time speeds up the less of it you have left.

They have one of these at 6 Flags Magic Mountain, near the entrance… when we were teenagers, and just getting licenses and one of us got a car- we’d all pile in and head out to Magic Mountain. We’d always end our evening with a ride on the carousel. It was tradition. Strangely, my daughter has developed the same tradition, by no encouragement from me. When she was little, that was all she’d ride when we’d go to M&M. As she grew older, and could ride revolution (which is right next to the carousel) – she made it her own tradition – hit it up for a ride or two before leaving! It all comes around…nostalgia.
