Pest Control

IMG_1956
A present from my cat.

I live in a high density urban environment and a fact of life when living in the big city is pests. Pests like mice, raccoons, and rats.

But my wife and I have enlisted an efficient and economical method of pest control. We have a dog and a cat.

Our dog is an effective deterrent when it comes to raccoons. Whenever she sees or even senses a raccoon, she’s off to the races, running the critter up a tree or over a fence. She also goes after squirrels and gophers with the same zeal. So far, though, she has yet to catch any of her prey.

Our cat, on the other hand, is a more adept hunter. On more than one occasion, he has presented us with a gift in the form of a recently deceased mouse or rat, like the poor rat in the picture above. It’s then my job to pick up the spoils of my cat’s hunt in a baggie and deposit it into the trash, while my wife rewards our cat for its offering by giving him a treat.

So forget about hiring expensive pest control companies. Pets are the best form of pest control.

This is my entry for today’s WordPress one-word prompt, “pest.”

Most cats are great hunters and they love to show you what they catch. I do not let my cats out of the house, but they can go in the lanai where the pool is and they often catch lizards.

Ours is an indoor cat, but we let him out in our backyard, where he manages to find some nasty critter and bring them to us as a prize.

Uhm, why have I adjusted assumed cats were used to “hunt” mice and such because they ATE them? I feel like I was lied to my whole childhood! 😯

Yeah, no cat over this way would want to wrestle with a rat in its weight class. Unless its a cracked out alley cat. I’ve seen squirrels run away from the rats we have over here. Ahh, NYC livin’.

I know nothing of pizza rats. Is that borough specific? Since I’ve moved fifteen floors up, I no longer have my ear to the ground where all the action is.

Are you perhaps referring to Splinter?

I’ll have confer with my son. He’s the TMNT fan in our household…or at least he was when he was a kid.

Don’t know. I think I saw a video on one of the late night talk shows a few months back of the pizza rat dragging a large slice of pizza down some steps

Yes. I vaguely recall that. Hey, it’s their world, we’re just trying to survive in it.
