One-Liner Wednesday — The Second Mouse

second mouse

“The early bird may get the worm, but it’s the second mouse that gets the cheese.”

I was always taught that being the first one to do something, to say something, or to be something was always the best. Who doesn’t want to be “Number One?” “Numero Uno?” No one remembers who came in second, right?

Tell that to the mouse who was the first to arrive at the trap. It’s dead, poor thing. But the second mouse, the one who didn’t get to the trap first, is the one who scored the prize. So much for that old adage, “He who hesitates is lost,” right?

In life, we can occasionally learn from the risks taken and the mistakes made by the “pioneers” who went before us, who got there first. And yet doesn’t the cheese taste just as good, even when you might not have been the first to get to it?

So maybe not being the first is not the trap that many people think it is. And, best of all, if you’re the second mouse, you’re still alive, too!
